Combating hate speech online: how Artificial Intelligence can detect anti-Semitism on social media

In the digital age, social media has become a powerful platform for individuals to express their views and connect globally. However, challenges have also arisen, such as the spread of hate speech and misinformation. To address this issue, Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a valuable tool to detect and combat hate speech online, including antisemitism.

Detecting Hate in Social Media Posts

Imagine a world where AI helps monitor and moderate online content, ensuring a safer space for everyone. That’s exactly what some researchers and developers are striving to achieve.

AI can analyze millions of social media posts for signs of hate speech in real time. These systems are trained using large labeled datasets, teaching them to identify patterns and keywords associated with different types of hate speech.

One of the key challenges is detecting subtle nuances and context in language. For instance, irony or sarcasm can be difficult for a machine to interpret. This is where the definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) comes into play.

Defining Antisemitism

IHRA provides a comprehensive working definition that goes beyond a simple dictionary meaning. It describes antisemitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews.” This definition recognizes that antisemitism can manifest itself in various forms, targeting Jewish individuals, their property, community institutions, or places of worship.

Training the Model to Detect Antisemitism

Both with various data structures (that is, we can find them as structured data, which is a great advantage) aimed at being used in the implementation of data detection projects assisted by Artificial Intelligence.

The authors even propose to extend a detailed multimodal (text and image) antisemitism detection architecture that takes advantage of recent progress in deep learning architectures.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and many other institutions, both civil, university and government, have addressed this digital threat and have presented their recommendations, as can be read in Using Artificial Intelligence: detecting antisemitic content and hate speech online.

Applying the Model in the Real World

These capabilities allow not only real-time detection, but also the implementation of effective reporting and correction mechanisms.
